Qualcomm Enables Leading Hospital in Latin America to Become More Connected to its Patients

SAN DIEGO — May 31, 2017 — Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced, through its subsidiary Qualcomm Life, Inc., the Company’s first Capsule™ implementation in Latin America. Qualcomm Life’s Capsule solution, is connecting and integrating medical device data at Hospital Unimed Recife III, a leading hospital system in Brazil. Yesterday during Hospitalar, a key health care event in Latin American, Hospital Unimed Recife III was awarded the top certification in HIMSS Analytics’ Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM), an eight-stage (zero through seven) certification process that aims to guide health care providers to digital medical record-keeping. With less than 260 hospitals having achieved Stage 7 globally, it is a distinct honor for Hospital Unimed Recife III to be the first hospital in Brazil and Latin America to be the recipient of the EMRAM Stage 7 Award.

Qualcomm Life’s Capsule solution has been integral in Hospital Unimed Recife III achieving its stage seven EMRAM certification. The Capsule solution allows for the near-real time capture of medical device data across hospital care areas and integrates directly into a local EMR from MV Sistemas to enhance clinical workflows and improve operational efficiencies.

“We’re thrilled to expand our global footprint into Latin American with a premier institution, like Hospital Unimed Recife III,” said Rick Valencia, president, Qualcomm Life. “As hospitals in the region are preparing for the digitization of data, we are uniquely positioned to provide a secure, medical grade platform for connected care in the hospital, at home and all points in between.”

“The frequency and flow of a patient’s vital sign data in the operating room and ICU settings is especially high, so it’s critical that our patients’ data is captured and integrated reliably,” said George Trigueiro Filho, administrative director at Hospital Unimed Recife III. “Qualcomm Life’s open connected health ecosystem of 800 device interfaces and leadership in connectivity made them an obvious choice to help us integrate medical devices and clinical data across our system, to enhance patient care and reduce costs. We are honored to have achieved the EMRAM certification based on this collaboration.”

The EMRAM certification encourages hospitals to use technology to better optimize patient care, leading to improved outcomes for patients, increased efficiency within the system and reduced operating costs.
